Oil pulling is a great way to make to ensure you are keeping your mouth as healthy as possible! After all, your mouth is the beginning of your gut and it’s so important to keep your gut happy! Along with your typical oral care routine, adding in oil pulling can be a great addition to make sure that you are keeping bad bacteria away from your gut. It’s super simple and takes 10 mins and you can do other things while you are oil pulling as well.
I stumbled upon oil pulling when I was aimlessly scrolling Instagram one day. A girl I follow was showing how she oil pulls every morning and I thought it looked gross. I kept seeing her Instagram stories though and she kept doing it. Then I decided I better look this stuff up!
Benefits of Oil Pulling
Like I mentioned above, the mouth is the beginning of the gut. Your mouth also holds a lot of bacteria, some good, and some bad. You do not want the bad bacteria getting into the gut as it can throw off your gut microbiome. The bad bacteria can also cause tooth decay, cavities, and gum issues. When you oil pull, the coconut oil will pull the bad bacteria out of the mouth and leave your mouth when you spit it out.
What made me fall in love with oil pulling was that it helped reduce the inflammation in my gums. For some reason, not matter how well I brush my teeth, I have a few spots where my gums get inflamed. When I oil pull on a regular basis, the inflammation in my gums is seriously reduced!
Also, another benefit is that it is cheap! All you need is coconut oil. You can actually use a lot of different oils, like olive oil but I have never tried it. I’ve only tried coconut oil and the taste isn’t bad so I’m going to stick with it!
How To Oil Pull
Oil pulling is so simple it will blow your mind! Are you ready?
- Get a tablespoon of organic cold pressed coconut oil (I get mine from my local grocery store)
- Pop the coconut oil in your mouth
- Swish the oil around for about 10 minutes (this is hard at first! You can work up to 10 mins)
- Spit the coconut oil out into the trash can and not in the sink!
In case you need a visual representation, I have put together this quick little how to video as well!
I hope this was helpful and I really hope that you incorporate oil pulling into your daily routine! Let me know how it goes!
