Summer Hair Care

In my quest for mermaid beautiful hair, I have been learning so much on how to properly care for your hair. Summer is a huge season for hair damage. I am being super intentional this summer about my hair care so that I do not just ruin all the progress I have made (check out my post on non-toxic haircare to see where I started!)! In past summers I have taken very little care of my hair. I have over processed it to get those summer highlights, I have washed it daily (if not more than once a day) due to chlorine, sweat, and grime, and I have ran my hair brush through my tangled lake soaked hair causing crazy amounts of micro damage!

Now I know every one wants to have fun this summer and they don’t want to waste their time worrying about their hair! So these tips are easy and take little effort, but incorporating them into your routine can make sure your hair stays healthy through the summer and even strengthen it!

Some things that can really destroy your hair in the summer are:

  • Sun (UV rays)
  • Heat
  • Tangles
  • Pool chemicals
  • Over washing
  • Dry weather

Since some of these things just aren’t avoidable during the summer, I am going to give you some great tips to keep your hair healthy while still enjoying your summer activities! My tips are:

Use a UV Protectant For Hair

A what? Have you every heard of a UV protectant for your hair? It’s like sunscreen, but for your hair! Monat makes an incredible UV Protectant and you can find it here! What this bad boy does is protect your hair from the harmful rays of the sun and for those of us who dye our hair (and who doesn’t?), the color will stay locked in and not fade. This means less dying your hair and less damage to it. On top of all that, this product is so light weight so it won’t gunk up your hair or cause oiliness. I like to keep this in my purse so it goes everywhere with me! I never know where my adventures will take me so this and sunscreen need to go everywhere with me!

Another product you can use for a UV protectant is Monat’s Unknot Detangler. You can find it here! This is not only a UV protectant but also a detangler for adults. It leaves your hair so silky and it contains Monat’s fiber rescue which strengthens your hair. I love this detangler and use it almost every day when brushing my hair.

Maintain Hydration

If you live somewhere where it is dry, the dry summer heat might mess with your hair. In Colorado it is very dry. When dryer months come around, I would suggest switching to a more hydrating shampoo and conditioner. Since I have oiler hair, I have to balance out the oil from my scalp and the dryness of my ends. In the summer time, I will switch to a more hydrating conditioner typically. I don’t change my shampoo since I’m already so oily, but if you suffer from a dry scalp, I would suggest changing your shampoo as well! Monat has a really awesome hydration system and you can find it here!

Another great way to maintain hydration in your hair is to use hair masques and a leave in conditioner. I use a hair mask about once a month to keep my ends hydrated. There are so many wonderful masks out there but I always use Monat. I typically use the Replenish Masque but I would also recommend the Heavenly Hydrating Masque. Both are great for hydrating the ends of your hair. Leave in conditioner is also so great for your hair in the summer! I typically put some leave in conditioner on the ends of my hair every single night before bed for a little treatment. I use this leave in conditioner. It can be applied to wet or dry hair and it doesn’t gunk up my hair.

Now for the best kept secret from Monat, the Double Action Hydrating Serum! This stuff is so refreshing and so amazing for any hair type! All you do it spray it throughout your hair to get hydration back into your hair. It also contains hyaluronic acid that actually helps lock in your products as well! Seriously, do yourself a favor and check it out!

Saturate Your Hair

If you are going to be making multiple trips to the pool this summer, you need to protect your hair from the nasty chemicals used to keep the pool clean. Chlorine can wreak havoc on your hair and can even cause some hair colors to fade drastically. To protect your hair from chlorine and other chemicals, I would suggest to saturate your hair with water before entering the pool. This will stop your hair from being able to absorb as much of the chlorinated water. Also, I would suggest rinsing off after getting out of the pool as well to get as much chlorine off your body and hair! To take it up a notch, get your hair wet then apply leave in conditioner to really help protect your hair!

Use Dry Shampoo

Summer time can leave you feeling sweaty and grimy, especially if you play outside a lot like my family and I do. This can make you want to wash your hair every day but I am here to tell you that is not a good idea! Over washing your hair can throw off the pH balance of your scalp. This can cause an over production of oil and make you feel like you need to be washing your hair more and more often. To combat sweat and grime, use a dry shampoo. I like to use a dry shampoo before I work out to help cut back on the sweat getting in my hair. Also, make sure you are using a dry shampoo that isn’t overly drying. Monat makes a dry shampoo like any other that actually nourishes your scalp at the same time. You can find this here!

Oil Treatments

One thing that has considerably transformed my hair was doing regular oil treatments. Oil treatments help balance the pH of your scalp like I talked about above. Since my hair is naturally oily, this really helped me combat the over production of oil which keeps my hair fresher for longer! I use a couple things in my oil treatments and then sleep with it in my hair over night. In the morning I will wash it out and my hair will be so refreshed! What are use for my oil treatments are:

Below I have a short little video that explains how I do my oil treatments!

Summer Hats

My last and final tip would be to wear a hat. not only is this good for your hair but it typically covers your face as well from harmful rays. I try to do this as much as possible but I typically always forget my hat!
